Nyerere tribute should inspire economic partnership

DAR ES SALAAM: ANGOLA’S decision to name one of its modern referral hospitals after Tanzania’s founding father, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, is a powerful gesture that transcends symbolism.

It is a recognition of a leader whose vision and commitment to African liberation helped shape the continent’s history.

The President Julius Nyerere Referral Hospital in Kilamba, Luanda, stands as a lasting reminder of the historic bonds between Tanzania and Angola.

Built at a cost of about US$150 million, the 250-bed specialised facility will provide advanced treatment for severe burn injuries and complex wounds while honouring a great African statesman.

The inauguration of the facility by Presidents João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço and Samia Suluhu Hassan, in the presence of Mama Maria Nyerere, celebrated a shared history.

Angola’s tribute acknowledges the pivotal role Mwalimu Nyerere played in supporting its struggle for independence through political, diplomatic and material assistance.

During his leadership, Tanzania became a centre of support for liberation movements across southern Africa.

Dar es Salaam provided a base for freedom fighters from countries still under colonial rule, reflecting Nyerere’s belief that Africa’s freedom was incomplete unless all African nations were free.

The naming of the hospital demonstrates that the legacy of African solidarity remains alive. However, Tanzania and Angola must now translate this historic friendship into stronger economic cooperation that benefits their people.

Political relations between the two countries have remained warm for decades, but economic ties still have significant room for growth.

The same determination that united African countries during the liberation struggles must now be channelled towards expanding trade, investment and economic integration. Tanzania and Angola possess complementary strengths that can be leveraged for mutual benefit.

Angola’s energy resources, industrial capacity and infrastructure investments can complement Tanzania’s strategic location, expanding ports, agricultural potential and access to regional markets.

There are clear opportunities to deepen cooperation in agriculture, energy, fisheries, tourism, mining services, manufacturing and trade.

Tanzania can benefit from Angola’s market opportunities, while Angolan businesses can use Tanzania as a gateway to East and Central African markets. Mwalimu Nyerere’s legacy was built on the conviction that African nations are stronger when they work together.

The hospital bearing his name in Luanda is a fitting tribute to that vision. The greatest honour to his memory would be ensuring that this friendship delivers tangible economic benefits.

The same spirit that united liberation movements should now drive trade, investment and regional economic integration.

Angola’s tribute to Mwalimu Nyerere has preserved a chapter of Africa’s liberation history in a modern healthcare institution.
