NMB pledges 500m/- for BMH specialised healthcare
DAR ES SALAAM: NMB Bank has reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to supporting Tanzania’s health sector through a significant pledge of 500m/- to Benjamin Mkapa Hospital.
The funding, to be disbursed over a two-year period, will directly support the provision and expansion of bone marrow treatment and kidney transplant services two of the most critical and highcost medical procedures in the country.
The announcement was made in Dar es Salaam during a high-level fundraising event led by NMB Bank’s Director of Investor Relations, Sustainability and Corporate Communications, Mr Innocent Yonazi. The event brought together stakeholders from public and private sectors, development partners and health facilities to support improved access to advanced healthcare in Tanzania.
Treasury Registrar, Mr Nehemiah Mchechu emphasised the national importance of investing in specialised medical services. He noted that the availability of such treatments within the country marks a major step forward in strengthening Tanzania’s healthcare system.
“These are very critical treatments. As a country, we should feel privileged to have a hospital capable of offering them,” he said.

He further highlighted the financial and emotional burden that many Tanzanians have faced in the past when seeking treatment abroad. “Many have lost their lives simply because they could not afford treatment outside the country. Strengthening local capacity will not only save costs but also save lives,” he added.
On his part, Mr Yonazi explained that the pledge reflects the Bank’s broader commitment to national development priorities, particularly in the health sector.
“This contribution reflects our belief in strengthening healthcare systems in Tanzania. As a bank, we allocate one per cent of our profits to Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives and health remains one of our key focus areas,” he said.
He added that NMB’s partnership with Benjamin Mkapa Hospital aligns with the Bank’s vision of creating long-term impact in communities by supporting initiatives that directly improve people’s quality of life. “We are proud to be part of this effort to expand access to life-saving treatments. This is not just a financial contribution it is an investment in the well-being of Tanzanians,” he noted.
Benjamin Mkapa Hospital Managing Director, Mr Abeid Makubi thanked the support and called for continued public-private collaboration.
He said the hospital introduced specialised services to address challenges faced by underprivileged Tanzanians. Under the agreement, NMB Bank will disburse 250m/- annually to boost infrastructure, equipment and patient care for bone marrow transplants and kidney treatment.
