New Funds expand investment opportunities

DAR ES SALAAM: THE capital market is poised for further growth following the launch of two new investment products, giving investors greater choice to diversify their portfolios and tap into a broader range of formal investment opportunities

The new Zan Timiza Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) and Timiza Plus Fund, managed by Zan Securities, come as the ETF segment of the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) expands rapidly, with market capitalisation reaching about 200bn/- by mid of August, up from 6.8bn/- last year.

Zan Securities Chief Executive Officer Raphael Masumbuko said the new products were part of the company’s strategy to make capital-market investment more accessible to Tanzanians.

“These achievements have given us the foundation, confidence and courage to introduce two new investment products designed to meet the different objectives of Tanzanian investors,” Mr Masumbuko said.

The company’s existing Timiza Fund has grown from an initial 10.3bn/- in May 2024 to more than 50bn/- by August, representing growth of about 369 per cent.

The fund now serves more than 13,000 investors across Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar and recorded an average return of 15 per cent in 2025.

Mr Masumbuko said the Timiza Plus Fund aimed at investors seeking regular income, with investments diversified across government securities, corporate bonds and money-market instruments. Up to 50 per cent of the fund may be invested in listed shares.

Speaking at the launch, Zanzibar Minister for Finance and Planning Juma Malik Akil called for stronger investor education to ensure ordinary Tanzanians understand and benefit from investment opportunities.

“There are still people who may have capital but do not know where to invest it,” he said, urging stakeholders to expand financial literacy programmes and help small savers access formal investment channels.

Zan Securities Chairman Abdisalaam Khatibu said the launch supports the company’s strategy to diversify investment products and strengthen Tanzania’s financial sector.

Representing the Capital Markets and Securities Authority (CMSA), Alfred Mkombo said the number of collective investment schemes in Tanzania had reached 30, expanding investment options, particularly for small investors.

He said Timiza Plus would also invest in well-performing collective investment schemes across East African Community markets, giving investors exposure beyond Tanzania.

DSE Chief Executive Officer Peter Nalitolela said the listing of the Zan Timiza ETF would increase the number of ETFs traded on the exchange to three, giving investors greater choice.

“ETFs are increasingly important globally because they allow investors to gain exposure to a range of securities through a single investment product,” he said.
