National Women’s Rugby team receive historic kit donation
DAR ES SALAAM: THE government has commended the Tanzania Rugby Union (TRU) for reaching a significant milestone through its collaboration with French sports manufacturer, Sergio Mat, which has generously donated the first-ever official kit for the national women’s rugby team.
This groundbreaking donation was celebrated during a special event in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday, marking a pivotal moment for women’s rugby in Tanzania.
Representing the government, National Sports Council (NSC) officer, Charles Maguzu expressed enthusiasm for this new chapter in the sport.
“This is a proud moment for the game and our nation,” he stated while accepting the kit on behalf of the government.
“We commend TRU for their outstanding work.
The partnership with Sergio Mat and the support from France has made this historic event possible,” he said.
Maguzu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the TRU and the women’s rugby team.

“We will work closely with TRU to ensure that our women’s team is well prepared and equipped for international competitions. This is just the beginning of a brighter future for rugby in Tanzania,” he emphasised.
He also encouraged other sports associations and federations in the country to follow TRU’s lead in establishing international partnerships, highlighting the benefits such collaborations bring to the nation’s sports development.
TRU President, Jacob Jonas expressed deep gratitude to Sergio Mat, assuring that the union would continue to build a formidable national women’s rugby team.
He also acknowledged the government’s support in making the event a success.
Fatma El-kindiy, TRU’s Head of Women’ Development, underscored the importance of the sponsorship for individual players, noting how it would help them showcase their talents on the global stage.
“This partnership with Sergio Mat is a key step toward the growth of women’s rugby in Tanzania, ensuring that the sport—and its athletes— receive the recognition they deserve.
“This sponsorship not only opens doors for our players but symbolises the promising future of women’s rugby in Tanzania as we prepare to compete internationally,” El-kindiy said.
