Mwinyi champions sports investment, calls for Military Games in Z’bar

ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR President, Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has confirmed his administration’s strong commitment to advancing the sports sector, citing its vital role in economic development, youth empowerment and public health promotion.

Speaking during a high-profile meeting with members of the Tanzania Armed Forces Sports Council (BAMMATA) at State House on Tuesday, Mwinyi highlighted the government’s strategic push to invest in state-ofthe-art stadia and sports facilities across the Isles.

“Our government recognises the power of sports, not only in uniting communities and fostering national pride but as a key driver for job creation and economic transformation,” the President Mwinyi said.

He applauded BAMMATA for its continued dedication in organising the annual military games, a tradition that has consistently brought together Tanzania’s defence and security forces in a spirit of camaraderie and athletic excellence.

In a significant proposal, the President called for this year’s military games to be hosted in Zanzibar, emphasising that the Isles are now well-equipped with adequate sporting venues capable of staging such a prestigious event.

“Hosting these games will not only showcase our improved infrastructure but also serve as a powerful platform to promote Zanzibar as a sporting and tourism hub,” Mwinyi stated.

He further emphasised that the event would symbolise the enduring cooperation between the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar (SMZ) and the nation’s defence and security institutions.

The President pledged full support from public institutions and urged private sector stakeholders to step forward and contribute to success of the games.

In response, Brigadier General Said Khamis, the Chairman of BAMMATA, expressed gratitude to the government’s visible strides in enhancing sports infrastructure across Zanzibar.

He confirmed that the Council had unanimously approved President Mwinyi’s request to host the 2025 Military Games in Zanzibar.

“This decision will not only boost local enthusiasm but also visibly reinforce the collaborative ties between SMZ and our national defence apparatus,” Brigadier General Khamis noted.

The Tanzania Armed Forces Sports Council brings together eight key sectors: the Army, Prisons, Fire and Rescue Services, SMZ Zone (Isles), Police, Immigration and the National Service (JKT).

This year’s military games are officially slated to kick off on August 14, 2025, in Zanzibar.
