MWAUWASA urges safe water use

MWANZA: MWANZA Region residents have been urged to use treated and safe water to protect themselves from health risks associated with consuming unsafe water.

The appeal was made recently by a water quality specialist from the Mwanza Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (MWAUWASA), Zahra Ulole during a public awareness campaign on the importance of water treatment.

The specialist said MWAUWASA uses specialised equipment to treat water and continuouslymonitor its quality to ensure it meets national safety standards before distribution.

She explained that the treatment process begins at Lake Victoria, the city’s main water source, where various chemicals are added to remove impurities and make the water safe for human consumption.

“We educate residents about the chemicals used in water treatment in accordance with national water quality standards,” she said.

She added that MWAUWASA continues to raise public awareness on every stage of the water treatment process, including the purpose and safe use of the chemicals involved.

“We demonstrate how aluminium sulphate is used during the scientific treatment process to attract dirt particles and bind them together,” she said.

She also explained the sedimentation stage, where impurities settle at the bottom through gravity and are separated from the water.

“We also educate residents on the use of calcium hypochlorite (chlorine), which destroys harmful microorganisms in water,” she said.

She said that after all treatment stages are completed and the required amount of chemicals has been applied, the water becomes safe for human consumption.
