Mwanza celebrates the 20th anniversary of community policing with a call to respect human rights

MWANZA: POLICE in Mwanza region have directed residents participating in community security groups not to take the law into their own hands, but to follow legal procedures while respecting human dignity and rights.
Mwanza Regional Police Commander, Mr Wilbrod Mutafungwa, issued the order today, August the exhibition of 20 years anniversary of community Policing.
He explained that cooperative security is important in strengthening public security and helping the Police Force deal with crime in various areas.
Mr Mutafungwa directed the district community police coordinators, inspectors and Ward Police should continue to provide education to cooperative security groups to ensure they fulfill their responsibilities in accordance with the law.
He said the continued provision of education on cooperative security has contributed to the reduction in crime incidents, especially murders caused by superstitious beliefs.
“Also, citizens have been having security concerns and complaints resolved in a timely manner at the ward level, which has increased citizens’ trust in the Police Force,” Mr Mutafungwa said.
In addition,he said the gender and child Protection Desk has continued to provide education to the community on how to identify, prevent, oppose and not turn a blind eye to acts of violence and abuse against women, children and men.

According to Mr Mutafungwa, the education has increased community awareness and contributed to the reduction of serious crimes including murders, assaults and other acts of violence, in parallel with strengthening the provision of timely information.
He said the Police Force has continued to achieve success in investigating and monitoring cases of violence due to citizens reporting incidents early, a step that enables appropriate action to be taken in accordance with the law.
Kwimba District Commissioner in Mwanza region, Mr Ngwi’labuzu Ludigija has asked the citizens of Mwanza region and all parts of the country to continue to support the police force in the country in exposing crimes.
He commended the police force for controlling killings resulting from bad traditions.
