MP pushes compensation for Engaruka villagers

MONDULI: MONDULI Member of Parliament, Isaack Joseph has pledged to closely follow up compensation for residents affected by the implementation of the strategic Engaruka Soda Ash Project, saying the investment should not compromise the rights and livelihoods of communities that depend on the area for grazing.

The government is implementing the project through the National Development Corporation (NDC) in the villages of Mbaash, Engaruka Chini, Idonyonado and Irerendeni.

The project aims to boost soda ash production, promote industrial development and contribute to the country’s economic growth. A total of 595 residents from the surrounding communities are expected to receive compensation to pave the way for implementation of the project.

However, some residents said they are yet to receive the compensation promised to them, while others appealed to the government to allow continued access to grazing land as the project progresses. Addressing a public meeting, Mr Joseph assured residents that the government would protect their rights while ensuring the successful implementation of the strategic investment.

“Those who have not yet received their compensation will be paid their rightful dues. At the same time, the area should continue to be used in a way that allows the investment to proceed while enabling Monduli residents to access grazing land without harassment or unnecessary restrictions,” he said.

The MP also thanked Monduli residents for electing him and supporting President Samia Suluhu Hassan, saying the confidence they had shown in their leaders came with a responsibility to address their concerns.

“Your grievances will not be ignored. I will continue following them up until lasting solutions are found in the best interests of the people of Monduli,” he said.

Mr Joseph reaffirmed his commitment to pursuing compensation issues while promoting cooperation between the government, investors and local communities to ensure the Engaruka Soda Ash Project delivers economic benefits without compromising the interests of surrounding communities.
