MOSHI: THE Municipal Council of Moshi (MMC) in Kilimanjaro region has removed the 20,000/- per annum parking fee for motorcycle taxis and rickshaws operating in the municipal.
The MMC Lord Mayor Mr Zuberi Kidumo said during the meeting between the council and owner of the motorcycle taxi–‘bodaboda’ and rickshaw–bajaj service providers recently, adding that the decision was reached to avoid double-taxation.
“We removed the annual parking fees after the government decision to return the collection of daily parking fees to local governments countrywide and we thought best to have a single fee,” the lord mayor said.
The municipal now collects a parking fee of 300/- per day for each motorcycle and 500/- for bajaj. These fees were earlier collected by Tanzania Rural and Urban Road Agency (TARURA).
“These fees per day are more than what we had set of 20,000/- per year but during the meeting we all agreed to settle for daily charges instead per annually,” Mr Kidumo said.
The Chairman of the two commuter service providers in Moshi, Mr Hamadi Bendera, said the MMC’s decision was good since it eradicated the burden of double taxation.
“This decision will give us motivation to carry out our duties and is commendable,” Mr Bendera said during the meeting called by MMC.
