Modern tech lifts Pemba seaweed farmers

ZANZIBAR: SEAWEED farmers in Makangale Village, Micheweni District in Pemba, are beginning to benefit from modern improvements in production and storage, a move expected to boost incomes and contribute to the national economy.
The farmers made the remarks after receiving equipment from development partners in collaboration with the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar.
The support package includes boats, production tools, a solar-powered seaweed drying facility and a community storage centre designed to reduce post-harvest losses.
Farmers said the new facilities will significantly enhance the quality of seaweed and improve their access to both local and international markets.

They added that the initiative demonstrates the government’s continued commitment to supporting coastal communities that depend on seaweed farming for their livelihoods.
The project forms part of a broader collaboration involving development partners, including United Nations agencies and the government of Spain, under the Zanzibar Joint Programme (ZJP).
Acting Executive Secretary of the Zanzibar Planning Commission, Dr Afua Mohamed, said the investment is aimed at minimising postharvest losses and improving product quality.
