Ministry, NEMC tackle pollution, water hyacinth threats in Tanzania

DODOMA: ENVIRONMENTAL pollution, biodiversity loss, and the presence of water hyacinths in Lake Victoria are the major issues that heralded today’s meeting, which involves officials from the Prime Minister’s Office (Policy, Parliament, and Coordination) and the National Environment Management Council (NEMC)

The meeting convened today, April 30, 2025, in Dodoma had an in-depth discussion on hot environmental issues that affect Tanzania.

The meeting aimed to strengthen cooperation between the government and its institutions in addressing environmental challenges for the nation’s sustainable development.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister’s Office was represented by its Permanent Secretary, Dr. Jim Yonazi, while NEMC was represented by its Director General, Dr. Immaculate Semesi, accompanied by her delegation. Among the issues discussed were environmental pollution, biodiversity loss, and the increasing presence of water hyacinths, particularly in Lake Victoria.

Dr. Yonazi emphasized the importance of collaboration between ministries and government agencies in tackling these issues, noting that the success of sustainable environmental management depends on collective effort.

 He commended NEMC for its effective environmental oversight and called for enhanced capacity building for local institutions through the provision of appropriate technology and equipment to address environmental concerns.

In her remarks, Dr. Semesi thanked the Prime Minister’s Office for its commitment to ensuring national development aligns with environmental protection. She pledged that NEMC will continue to work closely with the Office and other institutions to safeguard Tanzania’s environment for current and future generations.
