Mining forum spotlights local content

MWANZA: STAKEHOLDERS in the country’s mining sector are meeting in Mwanza today for the Local Content Compliance Forum to assess compliance with local content regulations as authorities tighten enforcement aimed at increasing Tanzanian participation across the industry’s value chain.

Organised by the Mining Commission, the threeday forum brings together government officials, mining companies, contractors and suppliers to review implementation of the country’s local content framework and identify ways to expand opportunities for Tanzanians in the extractive industry.

The forum comes as the Mining Commission steps up enforcement of local content requirements following amendments to the Mining (Local Content) Regulations, 2018, which took effect in September 2025.

The revised regulations require licence holders, contractors and subcontractors to prioritise Tanzanian goods, services and companies, while introducing stricter joint venture requirements for non-indigenous firms, new banking and procurement obligations and reserving selected goods and services exclusively for companies that are 100 per cent Tanzanian-owned.

Geita Gold Mine Limited (GGML), the forum’s Gold-level sponsor, said its participation reflects the company’s commitment to strengthening local content compliance and increasing opportunities for Tanzanian businesses. GGML Managing Director Ashraf Suryaningrat said developing Tanzanian talent has been central to the company’s operations over the past 25 years.

GGML employs more than 7,000 people, 98 per cent of whom are Tanzanians, while over 80 per cent of senior management positions are held by local professionals. The company also works with more than 600 Tanzanian small and medium-sized enterprises, supporting employment, skills development and business growth.

Earlier this month, the Tanzania Revenue Authority recognised GGML as the overall most compliant taxpayer and outstanding tax contributor for the 2024/25 financial year. Over the past 25 years, the company has contributed more than 9.8tri/- in taxes to the government.
