Mining firm commits on environmental conservation

SHINYANGA: BARRICK Bulyanhulu has said environmental protection is one of its focuses to support the country’s conservation efforts particularly in areas surrounding the mining sites. Barrick Bulyanhulu’s Public Relations Officer, Mary Lupamba said here on Monday that the mining company is committed to collaborating with the government in bringing about sustainable development.
“The environmental conservation and other social and economic development initiatives are among the gold mine’s priorities as it seeks to support communities in areas surrounding the mining,” she noted.
Ms Lupamba was speaking at an event where Barrick Bulyanhulu mine partnered with Kakola Digital Solution to plant varieties of trees at the new Bulyanhulu Primary School in Bulyanhulu Ward, Msalala District, Shinyanga Region. Speaking at the event, Kakola Digital Solution Director, David Semwenda, one of the Barrick Bulyanhulu suppliers, said they partnered to give back to the society part of their gains by planting trees for environmental conservation.
“For a local company working with Barrick Bulyanhulu is a great thing, and in particular by bringing back part of the profits to the communities surrounding the mining areas,” he said.
This initiative is important in restoring degraded lands to combat desertification, promote sustainable biodiversity conservation and improve the livelihoods of local communities in mining sites.
