Millions paid as President Ruto fulfills Ksh1 million pledge to harambee stars

KENYA: PRESIDENT William Ruto has kept his promise to reward the Harambee Stars handsomely following their historic 1–0 victory over DR Congo in the opening match of the TotalEnergies CHAN 2024, releasing a whopping Ksh42 million just 24 hours after the team’s memorable debut win.
The funds, channeled through the Ministry of Sports, covered performance bonuses for 27 players and 15 technical staff members—each pocketing Ksh1 million in line with the President’s performance-based incentive package announced over the weekend.
“Yes, it’s true. The President has honoured his promise. We received the money today, just as he pledged when he visited us after the match,” confirmed Harambee Stars winger Brian Michira in an interview with Mozzart Sport.
The reward scheme, unveiled by President Ruto on Saturday, is one of the most ambitious financial motivation packages ever rolled out for a Kenyan national team. The incentives are as follows: Ksh1 million for every win, Ksh500,000 for a draw, Ksh60 million for reaching the quarterfinals, Ksh70 million for a semifinal berth and Ksh600 million for lifting the CHAN trophy.
The bonus payout follows a landmark victory, delivered by Gor Mahia captain Austine Odhiambo, who scored a composed winner in first-half stoppage time to secure all three points for Kenya in their CHAN debut.
The result sees Harambee Stars tied at the top of Group A alongside Morocco, who hold the advantage on goal difference after a 2–0 win over Angola. With spirits soaring and the country’s top leadership firmly backing the team, attention now shifts to Thursday evening’s blockbuster clash with Angola at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
Another victory would not only bring Kenya closer to a quarter-final place but also unlock another Ksh1 million reward per player—further fueling motivation in the Stars’ camp.

Aside from Kenya and DR Congo, Morocco, Angola, and Zambia complete the competitive Group A, with all fixtures being hosted at Kasarani and Nyayo National Stadiums.
As the tournament progresses, one thing is certain: Harambee Stars have both the belief and the backing to dream big.
