Maritime security, trade, and economic cooperation herald the 9th Indian Ocean Conference

PORT LOUIS: THE Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, is participating in the 9th Indian Ocean Conference taking place in Port Louis, Mauritius, from April 10 to 12, 2026.

The conference brings together government leaders, diplomats, maritime security experts, and development stakeholders from countries bordering the Indian Ocean to discuss opportunities and challenges related to maritime security, trade, climate change, and economic cooperation in the region.

The Prime Minister of Mauritius,  Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, officiated the conference and emphasised unity, cooperation, and shared responsibility among Indian Ocean nations.

He called on countries to work together to address common challenges such as security threats, climate change, and economic development to build a secure, sustainable, and prosperous future for the region.

Speaking at the opening session, India’s External Affairs Minister,  Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, stressed the importance of strong regional cooperation and collective responsibility in the Indian Ocean. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to promoting stability, development, and prosperity and urged countries to collaborate in addressing key challenges such as maritime security, climate change, and sustainable development to ensure a peaceful and resilient region.

During the conference, Minister Kombo will take part in high-level discussions, highlighting the importance of strengthening regional cooperation and advancing the blue economy. He is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with ministers and leaders from various countries to enhance diplomatic relations and economic cooperation between Tanzania and other nations.

The conference serves as an important platform for exchanging ideas, sharing experiences, and developing joint strategies to promote sustainable development for countries in the Indian Ocean region and the world at large.
