Mtwara gas projects thrill Zanzibar House committee

MTWARA: The Zanzibar House of Representatives Committee on Economy and Investment has expressed satisfaction with the implementation of natural gas projects in Mtwara Region.

The Commitee’s members made the remarks on April 16, 2026, during a visit organised by the Petroleum Upstream Regulatory Authority (PURA) aimed at enhancing the committee members’ understanding of natural gas exploration, development and production activities.

Speaking during the visit, the Committee Chairperson, Mr Makame Sufiani, said the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania has made significant investments in natural gas infrastructure, yielding substantial benefits for the nation.

“We are satisfied with the great work being done here in Mtwara. This is a good example of how national resources can be effectively managed for the benefit of citizens,” he said.

On his part, the Deputy Minister for Blue Economy and Fisheries, Mr Mboja Mshenga, said the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar has begun preliminary stages of 3D petroleum data acquisition, which will help determine the presence of natural gas and oil in the islands.

“We have started foundational research steps to unlock investment opportunities in the oil and gas sector, which will help boost Zanzibar’s economy and increase government revenue,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the PURA Board of Directors, Mr Halifani Halfani, said the visit forms part of the implementation of a Memorandum of Understanding signed between PURA and the Zanzibar Petroleum Regulatory Authority (ZPRA) in 2022.

He noted that the collaboration provides an opportunity for exchanging technical and professional expertise in regulating and overseeing exploration, development and production of oil and natural gas.

He added that the move will enhance efficiency in the sector and ensure that the country’s resources are utilised for the benefit of its citizens.
