ARUSHA: ARUSHA Regional Commissioner, Paul Makonda has expressed his determination to elevate the image of Arusha City to reflect its status as the country’s tourism hub.

He directed executives of public institutions, civil servants and councillors to step up their performance and deliver effectively. Mr Makonda also expressed his dissatisfaction with the performance of some public officials in the region due to their failure to provide plans and strategies for the sectors they manage.

He said this during a working session with civil servants in Arusha Region held at the Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC) yesterday, whereby about 500 civil servants participated.

After getting details of the plans from various senior executives of public institutions in the region including Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS), Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA), Arusha Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (AUWSA), among others, RC Makonda said he was not satisfied with the performance of some of them for failing to provide accurate information of the sectors they manage.

“Regional Administration Secretary (RAS), I am not satisfied with the performance of some of our experts in Arusha, some of us are performing below par… executives please know your offices, know the things around you and what is supposed to be done, do your best,” emphasised Makonda.

He directed TANROADS and TARURA to ensure that modern street and traffic lights are installed on all roads, enhance supervision of roads construction to the required standards, to remove and rearrange billboards, to put signs showing the direction and distance from one area to another.

Regarding water projects, he demanded the manager of AUWSA to sit with water stakeholders and councillors next week to identify challenging areas and provide solutions.

“We have the ability to make Arusha an attractive city, we have good weather that when it rains you can smell the soil, and good enough God has blessed us with Mount Meru, which is a major tourist attraction,” he said.

He also wanted them to complete the construction of primary health centres, primary and secondary education infrastructures according to the existing plans and strengthen the main sources of income as specified in the budget plan of the relevant council.
