He told the delegates that President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration has resolved to feed East Africa, SADC and the continent but the challenge is access to fertilizer.

“We still have the challenge of access to fertilizer and this affects food production,” he said. “The government has been increasing budget allocation to the ministry of agriculture as part of enhancing the sector.”

Tanzania’s fertilizer production capacity stood by 200,000 tons, according to official government figures. However, the demand is estimated to be more than 800,000 tons.

A factory is being constructed in Dodoma with a production capacity of 400,000 tons per annum. It is also expected to double production to 800,000 tons but the premier says the country can’t depend on a single factory.
