DAR ES SALAAM: THE Executive Secretary of the Planning Commission, Mr. Lawrence Mafuru, passed away today (November 9, 2024).
Mafuru died at Apollo Hospital in India, where he had been receiving treatment.
Following Mr. Mafuru’s passing, President Samia Suluhu conveyed her condolences to the Minister of Planning and Investment, Prof. Kitila Mkumbo, as well as to the staff of the Planning Commission, family, relatives, and friends of the deceased.

“Mafuru will be remembered for his exemplary model of public service, hard work, and creativity in the various posts he held in the government,” President Samia said in her message.
Who is Lawrence Mafuru?
In his Linkedn page, Lawrence Mafuru introduced himself as a seasoned Certified Chartered Banker from the Chartered Institute of Bankers London and a Certified Financial Markets Dealer by ACI Financial Markets.
He started his career at Standard Chartered Bank in 1998 in the area of International Trade Finance.
Lawrence Nyasebwa Mafuru had varied experience in the industry over the last 19 years includes roles as Head of Treasury – National Bank of Commerce (NBC), CEO – National Bank of Commerce (NBC) and Chairman of the Tanzanian Bankers Association (TBA) and as Treasury Registrar at the ministry of finance. A noticeable figure and sought after speaker on matters related to banking and finance.
He was passionate about driving client value through shared insights.
He was the Founder and Managing Partner at Bankable, a financial services firm that partner with clients to assist them to procure, innovate, and execute banking products and services more efficiently.
