LATRA issues 388,715 licenses as it expands the use of digital systems to oversee land transport services

DODOMA: TANZANIA’S Ministry of Transport, through the Land Transport Regulatory Authority, has continued to oversee and regulate land transport services across the road, railway, and cable transport sectors while expanding the use of digital systems and technology in service delivery.
Presenting the Ministry of Transport’s budget speech for the 2026/2027 financial year in Parliament, Transport Minister Makame Mbarawa said that between July 2025 and March 2026, LATRA issued a total of 388,715 transport licences.
He said the figure represents a 55 percent increase compared to the same period in the previous financial year, reflecting growth in transport activities and improvements in service delivery within the sector.

Professor Mbarawa noted that the government, through LATRA, has continued regulating transport fares and ensuring quality transport services while also promoting the use of alternative energy, including electric vehicles in the country.
He further stated that 13,843 buses were connected to the Vehicle Tracking System (VTS) to improve travel safety, while 12,699 drivers were registered in the system.
In another development, the minister said the Electronic Ticketing System (CeTS) has continued to record positive results, with 8,126 buses integrated into the platform. He added that more than 21 million passengers had used the system to purchase travel tickets by March 2026.
