KISWAHILI FOR BEGGINERS: The proverb “Aisifuye mvua imemnyea“”

THIS proverb means you cannot deny or pretend that something did not happen to you when the evidence is obvious. In English, it is close to “You can’t deny the obvious” or “You can’t pretend you’re not affected by something that has clearly happened to you.”
Aisifuye = he/she who does not admit or acknowledge
Mvua imemnyea = the rain has fallen on him/her
The idea is that if someone has been caught in the rain, their wet clothes clearly show that they have experienced the rain. They cannot convincingly deny it.
Origin
It comes from traditional Swahili oral wisdom and everyday observation of life. Rain is used as a metaphor because its effects are visible: a person who has been rained on becomes wet. Like many African proverbs, it teaches through a simple everyday situation.
How to use it
Example 1:
A person has clearly benefited from a decision but denies it. You can say:
“Aisifuye mvua imemnyea; tunajua kabisa amefaidika.”
Example 2:
Someone is clearly affected by a problem but refuses to admit it:
“Aisifuye mvua imemnyea—hata kama anakataa, tatizo limemgusa.”
In English:
“He keeps denying that the situation affected him, but aisifuye mvua imemnyea.”
Main lesson: Reality and its effects cannot easily be denied when they are clearly visible.
