MOROGORO: The District Commissioner for Kilombero in Morogoro Region, Mr. Danstan Kyobya, has directed community development officers (CDOs) and executives at the ward and village levels to mobilize residents in their respective areas for the five-day National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) free health checkup programme.
Their participation, according to the district commissioner, will enable wananchi to register for NHIF health insurance services.
Inspecting the implementation of the NHIF’s programme in Ifakara Town Council recently, Mr. Kyobya praised the initiative, which has so far enabled about 100 people out of 150 who checked their health status to be diagnosed with conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, prostate cancer, and obesity.
“I urge the NHIF Regional Manager, Mbala Shitindi, to thoroughly train these CDOs before August 30, 2024, so that they can become effective teachers and ambassadors in their wards, as they are already experts in community development,” the District Commissioner advised.
“Many of us don’t know our health status. Am I wrong? So, it is important that we check and know, so that we can take appropriate measures.”

He added that two people were found to have respiratory-related complications, and four others were referred to St. Francis Hospital and Good Samaritan Cancer Hospital for further examination and treatment.
NHIF is implementing this initiative as Tanzania moves towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC), which will significantly help increase access to healthcare for those who could not previously afford these services.
