‘Keep military off politics’
DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to diligently, loyally and professionally fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities in accordance with its oath of service.
TPDF’s Acting Director of Information and Relations, Colonel Bernard Mlunga, issued the statement over the weekend following reports that some individuals had used social media to link the TPDF with political matters.
Col Mlunga clarified that such posts often originate from individuals falsely claiming affiliation with the TPDF or from those previously dismissed due to misconduct, political involvement, or activism.
“For this reason, the TPDF wishes to assure the public that it will continue to execute its constitutional duties faithfully, obediently and professionally, in line with our oath,” said Col Mlunga in a brief, threeparagraph statement. In a related development, the Tanzania Editors’ Forum (TEF) yesterday commended the TPDF’s swift response, describing the statement as a proactive step to inform the public and curb misinformation.

In a statement signed by TEF Chairperson Deodatus Balile, the forum urged political parties to refrain from using revolutionary rhetoric as a shortcut to power and instead focus on policy-driven campaigns that respect the ballot box.
“TEF issues a special warning on the use of social media. We have observed platforms being misused to spread false information, misleading images and videos containing offensive content that could threaten national peace. We urge Tanzanians to verify facts before sharing content. Social media users must prioritise ethics, patriotism and responsibility, rather than turning platforms into tools of fear and hatred,” the statement read.
TEF further called on all political parties to avoid provocative language and to denounce such messages immediately and unequivocally, in order to protect national unity and ensure the safety and wellbeing of citizens and their property.
