Kagera residents celebrate Magufuli’s legacy

KAGERA: KAGERA residents have paid tributes to the, describing him as a courageous leader who dedicated most of his life to the welfare of the majority poor.

In an interview with the ‘Daily News’, residents said President Magufuli’s legacy will endure for many years.

Kagera Regional CCM Chairman, Dr Nazir Karamagi, said the late president will be remembered for his efforts in strengthening social services, including the construction of the Busisi Bridge, the MV Mwanza Hapa Kazi Tu steamer and the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).

“For us citizens in the Lake Zone regions, we will always remember the late President Magufuli. The improved Busisi Bridge, the MV Mwanza steamer and the SGR have greatly boosted people’s economies. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Dr Karamagi said.

Mr Khalid Abdul, a resident of Rwamishenye Ward in Bukoba Municipal, said that under the late president’s leadership, Tanzania witnessed the emergence of a middle-class income economy.

Mr Benson Eustace, a resident of Nshambya Ward, echoed similar views, adding that the late president will be remembered for his efforts to unite Tanzanians.

“I will personally remember him for his efforts to unite people and restore public faith in government. We will always miss him very much,” he said.

Janeth Kaimukilwa (26), a teacher at Kamishango Primary School in Muleba District, said she remembers President Magufuli for his love and commitment to improving people’s lives, especially the poor.

“I hail from a poor family, but with President Magufuli’s support, I was able to join secondary school and later complete a diploma in Education. The education I got was free and government-supported,” she said, tears running down her cheeks.

Vice-President Dr John Nchimbi yesterday led hundreds of mourners in a memorial mass held at St Maria Catholic Church in Chato, Geita Region.

President Magufuli, a former Member of Parliament of Chato and later Minister for Transport, was elected President of Tanzania in the 2015 General Election. He died on March 17, 2021, after serving a five-year term.
