Jafo calls for responsible alcohol use amid TBS warning

DODOMA: MINISTER for Industry and Trade, Dr Selemani Jafo has urged Tanzanians especially the young people to exercise caution and responsibility when consuming alcoholic beverages, particularly hard liquor.
His call follows alarming findings by the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) regarding the rise in alcohol abuse.
Speaking in Dodoma on Tuesday, Dr Jafo said the government has already taken measures to address the issue, following concerns raised by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Industry, Trade, Agriculture and Livestock.
“The work is progressing well, but it is the responsibility of society to guide our youth and remind them that everything has its limits. Even when having fun, moderation is important. The community must take collective action to protect our young people,” he emphasised.
The Minister made the remarks after a joint session with the committee, which also included key agencies under his ministry, such as the TBS, the Weights and Measures Agency (WMA), and the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA).

He stressed that while regulatory authorities continue to enforce standards, broader community involvement is vital in instilling values and encouraging responsible behaviour especially among youth.
Dr Jafo also reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to supporting national development by ensuring the availability and production of high-quality goods that meet safety standards and uphold consumer protection.
On her part, Committee Vice Chairperson Ms Mariam Ditopile described the meeting as productive and insightful, saying it deepened the members’ understanding of how regulatory institutions operate.
“Members now understand better the systems used to identify and verify products made in the country, which will help enhance revenue collection,” said Ms Ditopile, who also serves as a Special Seats MP.
She urged TBS and WMA to strengthen their oversight mechanisms and ensure full compliance by importers to safeguard the quality and safety of goods circulating in the local market.
“The government has put in place clear standards to protect consumers. All stakeholders in the supply chain, from manufacturers to importers must strictly observe these regulations,” she said.
