Govt acts on youth alcohol abuse

DODOMA : MINISTER for Industry and Trade, Dr Selemani Jafo, has called on Tanzanians particularly the youth to  exercise caution and responsibility when consuming alcoholic beverages, especially hard liquor, following alarming findings by the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) on rising alcohol abuse.

Speaking in Dodoma on Tuesday, Dr Jafo said the government has already taken steps to address the problem, responding to concerns raised by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Industry, Trade, Agriculture and Livestock.

“The work is progressing well, but it is the responsibility of society to guide our youth and remind them that everything has its limits. Even when having fun, moderation is important. The community must take collective action in protecting our youth,” he stressed.

The Minister made the remarks after a joint session with the committee, which also included key institutions under his docket such as TBS, the Weights and Measures Agency (WMA), and the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA).

He noted that while regulatory bodies continue to enforce standards, community involvement is essential in shaping values and promoting responsible behaviour, particularly among the younger population.

Dr Jafo also reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to supporting national development by ensuring the production and availability of quality goods that meet safety standards and promote consumer protection.

On her part, Committee Vice Chairperson Ms Mariam Ditopile described the meeting as productive and insightful, saying it deepened the members’ understanding of how regulatory institutions operate.

“Members now better understand the systems used to identify and verify products made in the country, which will help enhance revenue collection,” said Ms Ditopile, who also serves as a Special Seats MP.

She urged TBS and WMA to strengthen their oversight mechanisms and ensure full compliance by importers to safeguard the quality and safety of goods circulating in the local market.

“The government has put in place clear standards to protect consumers. All stakeholders in the supply chain—from manufacturers to importers—must strictly observe these regulations,” she said.
