IST draws 210 athletes for swimming showdown

OVER two hundred athletes from fifteen clubs will lineup at International School of Tanganyika (IST) today for this year’s Tanzania Junior Swimming titles.

It’s an event intended for swimmers aged below 12 years.

Briefing the Daily News yesterday in the city, the Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA) Chairman David Mwasyoge said preparations for the big event have been concluded; just waiting for the talented swimmers to display their skills.

He said those eligible to participate n the contest are the youth aged below 12 years, insisting that it is a good platform to harness talents among the young swimmers.

“We have kids from 5 to 12 years who will compete in various categories, and by doing this, we are promoting swimming from the grassroots level.

“We are urging people to bring their kids to watch the game and be inspired,” he said.

He named the clubs  as Taliss, DSC, Reptides, FK, Lake Swim Club, Champion Rise, Bluefins, Majimaji,

Braeburn Arusha, Braeburn Dar, Mwanza Swim Club, Morogoro, Pigec, Wahoo and Premier.

The TSA Secretary General, Inviolata Itatiro, thanked the stakeholders for supporting the junior level tournament insisting they are the nation’s future in the swimming world.

The stakeholders who offered their support include Bwana Sukari, a product of Kilombero Sugar Company, Pepsi and JustFit; vendors are F and L Juice, Wrap and Roll, Burger 53, and DelhiDarBar.

Adding, she said TSA organises juniors’ events to promote the sport, besides giving international experience to budding swimmers who expect to fight for their clubs but also improve their personal best (PB) times.

“The competition is a continuation of TSA’s mission to raise awareness and promote swimming in Tanzania,” Inviolata stated.

The top three swimmers in each age group will receive trophies and medals during the event.

“Points will be allocated for the first- to 10th-place winners.

The top swimmer will get 20 points; the second 16 points; the third 14 points; the fourth 12 points; the fifth 10 points; the sixth 8 points; the seventh 6 points; the eighth 4 points; the ninth 2 points and 10th one point,” she said.

She said points for 10-year-old and over events such as the 400 metres freestyle, 200 metres individual medley and 200 metres freestyle will be allocated to the individual swimmer and medal awards will be awarded based on final results rather than age group.
