Iramba schools tighten fire safety preparedness

SINGIDA: THE Fire and Rescue Force and education leaders in Iramba District have agreed on measures to strengthen fire prevention and emergency preparedness in primary and secondary schools to improve the safety of students and school infrastructure.

The measures were agreed during a meeting held yesterday, bringing together Fire and Rescue officers, council education officials, 20 Ward Education Officers, 110 primary school head teachers and 33 secondary school heads.

Speaking at the meeting, Iramba Fire and Rescue Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Fire (ASF) Judith Kweka called on school leaders to ensure every school is equipped with firefighting equipment and functional fire safety systems that are regularly inspected and maintained.

“Schools must have firefighting equipment and systems in place, and they should be regularly inspected to ensure they are ready for use whenever an emergency occurs,” ASF Kweka said.

She said proper preparedness would enable schools to respond quickly and effectively whenever fire incidents occur, helping protect both learners and school infrastructure.

Ms Kweka also stressed the importance of building a safety culture in schools through regular awareness and preparedness measures.

“Preparedness is the first line of defence against fire disasters, and schools should ensure everyone knows how to respond when an emergency occurs,” she said.

Speaking on behalf of the District Primary and Secondary Education Officers, Daudia Challange thanked the Fire and Rescue Force for providing practical fire safety training to school leaders.

“This training will help teachers and students take the right precautions and respond appropriately whenever fire incidents occur,” Mr Challange said
