IPU summit opens doors for Tanzania

ARUSHA: TANZANIA is poised to benefit from a range of opportunities, including the promotion of its tourism sector, trade and investment, as global legislators are expected to convene in the country for the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). International lawmakers will gather in Arusha from October 5 to 9 this year to deliberate on various global agendas.

Arusha Regional Commissioner, Mr Amos Makalla, said yesterday that the upcoming event is expected to attract a large number of parliamentarians, offering a valuable platform to showcase Tanzania’s tourist attractions, as well as business and investment opportunities.

Mr Makalla is in Istanbul, Turkey to attend the current ongoing 152nd IPU Assembly to learn and observe for fast-track preparation in Tanzania.

Mr Makalla explained that their participation in the 152nd Assembly is aimed at observing and learning from the ongoing preparations in order to ensure that Tanzania is well prepared to host the 153rd Assembly.

“The attendance of global legislators in many numbers will serve as an opportunity to promote Tanzania internationally, particularly its tourism potential and favourable environment for trade and investment,” said Mr Makalla.

He further said that hosting the Assembly is an honour for Tanzania and offers a chance to present itself globally as a peaceful country with warm and hospitable people. He also extended an invitation to all delegates to attend the 153rd IPU Assembly in Tanzania.

Makalla was accompanied by the Member of Parliament for Kigoma North, Tiza Mayeye, who is also an IPU member. Ms Mayeye said that the ongoing 152nd Assembly has brought together legislators from different countries to discuss a range of global issues in turn Tanzania will be the host later this year.

Conveying the greetings from the Speaker of the National Assembly, Mussa Azzan Zungu, Deputy Speaker, Daniel Sillo while leading the Tanzanian delegation at the 152nd IPU Assembly invited the global parliamentarian to Tanzania.

Mr Sillo reaffirmed Tanzania’s commitment to promoting its investment opportunities and tourist attractions on the international stage, using the forum as a platform to showcase the country’s potential. The ongoing 152nd IPU Assembly is being held in Istanbul, Türkiye, from April 15-19 2026.

All IPU statutory bodies are meeting on this occasion, including the Governing Council, Standing Committees, the Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians, the Committee on Middle East Questions, as well as the Forum of Women Parliamentarians and the Forum of Young MPs.

The General Debate is centred on the overall theme, “Nurturing hope, securing peace and ensuring justice for future generations.” It provides a platform for delegates to deliberate, exchange views, and galvanise parliamentary action on these key global priorities.

The Assembly will adopt resolutions on the emergency item, as well as on subjects considered by the Standing Committees.

These include Peace and International Security, focusing on “The role of parliaments in establishing robust post-conflict management mechanisms and restoring a just and lasting peace,” and Sustainable Development, focusing on “Building a fair and sustainable global economy: The role of parliaments in combating protectionism, reducing tariffs, and preventing corporate tax avoidance.” The Assembly is expected to conclude with the adoption of an outcome document reflecting the key conclusions and commitments of the General Debate theme.
