Investors urged to support basketball development
SHINYANGA: INVESTORS have been urged to step forward and invest in basketball to help the sport reach greater heights in the country.
The call was made yesterday by Julius George, a player and patron of Kahama Sixers Basketball Team from Shinyanga Region, saying that Tanzania’s basketball scene is steadily gaining momentum but requires stronger financial backing to sustain its growth.
George noted that improved investment and sound administration within the Tanzania Basketball Federation (TBF) would significantly enhance the quality and competitiveness of the sport.
“Investment is the foundation of success in any sport. Without sufficient funds, you cannot build a strong league, organise quality competitions or properly motivate players,” he said.
According to George, the entry of serious investors would bring new hope to Tanzanian basketball by strengthening domestic leagues, increasing competition and attracting emerging talent from across the country.
In a related development, George congratulated Hasheem Thabeet following his election as President of TBF, expressing optimism about the future of the game under the new leadership.

He said Thabeet’s international exposure and professional playing career at the highest level placed him in a strong position to introduce meaningful reforms.
“Thabeet has high-level experience and a wide international network. We believe he will bring reforms in management, youth development and create more opportunities for international competitions,” George said.
He further emphasised the need for the federation to prioritise the strengthening of youth leagues, empowerment of coaches and establishment of specialised talent development centres to raise standards from the grassroots level.
George also congratulated Tanzania for making history by participating in the Basketball Africa League (BAL), noting that Dar City will represent the country in the prestigious continental competition.
He expressed confidence that with strategic investment, strong leadership and grassroots development, basketball in Tanzania can achieve sustainable growth and greater international recognition.
