Indian High Commissioner eyes holding consular camps in regions
DAR ES SALAAM: NEW Indian High Commissioner to Tanzania, Mr Bishwadip Dey has promised to organise consular camps in different regions at regular intervals.
The move is mainly intended to bring the High Commission closer to the community through explaining and offering various services offered by the diplomatic office.
The High Commissioner made the pledge in the statement issued recently by the High Commission after he assumed the role.
A seasoned diplomat arrived in the country on August 1, 2024.Upon his arrival Mr Dey expressed appreciation to the Indian diaspora for their invaluable contributions and reinforcing the bilateral relations between India and Tanzania, asking for their continued support to the High Commission.
Mr Dey, who has been part of the Indian Foreign Service since 2001, brings a wealth of experience to his new position according to the statement.
Before his current appointment, Mr Dey was on deputation to the Department of Atomic Energy in Mumbai as joint secretary (external relations and power) from June 2021 to June 2024.

“Throughout his career, Mr Dey has extensively worked on the Middle East peace process, Arab politics, neighbourhood politics, diaspora issues and nuclear diplomacy, therefore gaining substantial expertise in these areas,” read the statement in part.
The statement said Mr Dey is fluent in Hindi, English, Bangla and Arabic. He received his early education at Dalhousie Public School, Dalhousie and Pitts Gomia School, Bokaro.
He graduated with a BA (Hons) in Political Science with a Gold Medal and completed LLB (Gold Medal) and LLM from Delhi University.
He also obtained several postgraduate diplomas in international law, international institutions, international human rights, refugee law and humanitarian law from the Indian Society for International Law (ISIL).
“His diplomatic journey began in the UNES division of the Ministry of External Affairs during his probationary period between 2001 and 2003. He subsequently served in various capacities around the world,” the statement says.
From August 2003 to August 2005, Mr Dey was the third secretary at the Embassy of India in Cairo, Egypt, where he focused on Arabic language studies.
He then moved to the embassy of India in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he served as second secretary, handling political, information and education work while also managing the head of chancery duties from August 2005 to March 2008.
Mr Dey’s diplomatic career further saw him heading the representative of India office in Ramallah, Palestine, from April 2008 to March 2012.
He returned to the Ministry of External Affairs as deputy secretary and then director of external publicity from March 2012 to August 2014.
His role as deputy chief of mission at the Embassy of India in Thimphu, Bhutan, spanned from August 2014 to July 2016.
In a significant career highlight, Mr Dey served as the Indian High Commissioner to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago from August 2016 to February 2019, with concurrent accreditation to Grenada, Dominica and Montserrat.
He then took on the role of deputy High Commissioner of India in Dhaka, Bangladesh, from March 2019 to June 2021.
