Home UTI test launched to boost early diagnosis

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA has expanded access to preventive healthcare with the launch of a home urinary tract infection (UTI) test that enables individuals to screen themselves before seeking medical attention. Known as the ‘Checkfor UTI Test’, the innovation is expected to support early detection of urinary tract infections, one of the country’s most common health conditions.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday, community health specialist Dr Eshton Nkala said the test is being introduced in Tanzania for the first time to encourage early diagnosis and prompt treatment. He said UTIs often begin with symptoms such as frequent urination, pain or a burning sensation during urination, lower abdominal pain and urine that changes colour or develops an unusual odour.

Dr Nkala noted that delayed recognition of symptoms remains one of the biggest challenges in managing UTIs, with many patients’ postponing medical attention until complications arise. He said early diagnosis helps reduce the risk of severe infections, recurring illness and other health complications.

“The Checkfor UTI Test provides people with a simple way to obtain preliminary information about the likelihood of having a UTI while at home,” he said.

Dr Nkala stressed that the test is not intended to replace professional medical care.

“It does not replace a doctor’s consultation or a hospital visit. Instead, it helps users take early action when they experience symptoms or have concerns about their health,” he said.

According to him, the test enables users to make informed decisions to seek further medical assessment, laboratory diagnosis and appropriate treatment without unnecessary delay. He said the innovation is particularly beneficial for people who delay seeking healthcare because of fear, inconvenience, lack of time or failure to recognise early symptoms.

Dr Nkala added that the Checkfor UTI Test is manufactured locally by Canadian Biotech Company, reflecting Tanzania’s growing capacity to produce healthcare products that support disease prevention and early diagnosis. The product is currently available through JD Pharmacy, Bariki Pharmacy and Cugra General Supplier.

He said the innovation demonstrates the country’s continued progress in expanding locally manufactured medical supplies and improving access to affordable healthcare technologies.

“In an era where preventive healthcare begins with individual awareness, the Checkfor UTI Test is an important tool for supporting early diagnosis. Symptoms should not be ignored, diagnosis should be made early and appropriate treatment should be sought promptly,” he said.
