Govt reaffirms communication role as Tigo rebrands

DAR ES SALAAM: THE government has reiterated that the communication sector is essential for driving the digital economy, fostering innovation and enhancing financial inclusion by expanding access to information and services across communities.

This growing importance is reflected in the latest data from the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), which showed mobile money subscriptions increased by 9.0 per cent from 55.7 million accounts in the quarter ending this June to 60.8 million in three months to September.

Additionally, internet subscriptions also increased by 5.0 per cent from 39.3 million users at the end of June to 41.4 million users as of September this year .

The Minister for Information, Communication and Information Technology, Mr Jerry Silaa, said the the numbers underscore the significant role the communication sector plays in advancing the country’s digital economy and promoting financial inclusion.

“This demonstrates how digital connectivity is expanding economic access across the country.

“This growth, adaptability and forward-thinking approach are critical in today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape,” said Mr Silaa during the rebranding of Tigo to Yas and its mobile money unit, Tigo Pesa to Mixx by Yas.

Yas is owned by Honoris Tanzania Public Limited, which is part of the Axian Telecom Group. This rebranding initiative is part of a broader strategy by Axian to harmonise its subsidiaries across Africa.

Mr Silaa underscored the company’s initiative that it adds significant value to the nation’s communication services as the telco celebrates 30 years of operations in the Tanzanian market.

The Axian Telecom Chairman, Mr Hassanein Hiridjee, said that empowering the next generation of digital innovators requires a Pan-African mobile operator operating across multiple markets.

“As we bid farewell to the brands we’ve grown with, we’re transitioning to a new era of growth and innovation. We believe this initiative will continue delivering transformative and inclusive technological solutions through sustainable connectivity,” he said.

Additionally, The Mixx by Yas Director, Ms Angelica Pesha, said the rebranding reflects the company’s commitment to fostering digital innovation and financial inclusion within in the country.

“The communication sector has become a critical link across various industries, making a significant contribution to societal development and the economic growth of the country,” she said.

Yas has played a vital role in the nation’s economic development, ranking among the top 30 taxpayers. Over the past three years, the company has contributed a total of 1.08tri/- through Value Added Tax (VAT), levies, PAYE and withholding tax.

Moreover, the company has supported employment by directly hiring over 600 Tanzanians and creating approximately 200,000 indirect jobs through its network of agents.

Speaking about the company’s initiatives to improve communication infrastructure, she said Yas has upgraded over 4,000 towers to 4G technology nationwide and introduced 5G in major cities.
