Govt organises free medical camp for Zanzibar residents

ZANZIBAR: THE government has organised a four-day free health check-up and medical treatment camp for Zanzibar residents.

The camp is coordinated by the Mainland’s Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports in collaboration with the Zanzibar Ministry of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports.

According to a statement released yesterday by the Zanzibar Information Department (Maelezo-Zanzibar), the medical camp is scheduled to take place from today to Sunday, at the New Amani Complex.

The statement, signed by the Director of the Zanzibar Information Department, Mr Salum Ramadhan Abdalla, also said that Lumumba Regional Hospital in Zanzibar is among the key organisers of the camp.

“Residents of Zanzibar are invited to attend and receive free health check-ups and medical treatment for both children and adults. Specialist doctors from Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) and Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI) will provide the services. The medical services will be available at the venue from today between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm,” the announcement states.

Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) will offer screenings for kidney function, diabetes, eye health and mental health, along with health education on kidney diseases, diabetes, eye care, mental health, cancer and proper nutrition.

The Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) will provide tests for heart function, blood pressure, blood sugar levels and body mass index (BMI), as well as education on heart diseases, proper nutrition and medication use.

The Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI) will conduct examinations for bone, brain, spinal cord and nervous system conditions.

It will also offer education on musculoskeletal, neurological and spinal health, as well as physical therapy, proper posture and sleeping habits to prevent back pain.

The statement emphasised that these services are part of a community outreach programme facilitated by the collaboration of these national hospitals and the coordinators of the 20th Government Information, Communication, Public Relations and Protocol Officers’ Workshop.
