Govt confirms no casualties in Geita mine collapse

GEITA: THE Police Force in Geita Region has confirmed that no fatalities were recorded following the collapse of four mining pits at Msasa Mining in Bukombe District.

The incident occurred on Sunday at around 10:00 am, during a routine inspection of pits undergoing rehabilitation at the mine in Runzewe West Ward.

Geita Regional Police Commander, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP) Safia Jongo, issued the statement after the Fire and Rescue Force completed its investigation at the scene.

SACP Jongo said findings indicate that no mining activities were taking place at the time of the collapse, as precautionary measures had already been taken following earlier safety concerns.

“We worked closely with the mine management to excavate the entire affected area to confirm that no human harm had occurred,” she said.

She added that while some mining equipment was found buried under debris, no bodies or signs of human presence were discovered.

“The rumours circulating were alarming, with claims that more than 200 people had been affected. I confirm that although the mine collapsed, there were no human casualties,” she emphasised.

She urged the public to refrain from spreading misinformation during such incidents and called on those who shared unverified reports to correct them.

SACP Jongo warned that legal action would be taken against individuals who continue to spread false information that may cause public panic.

“Geita Region is safe and Msasa Mine is stable. The challenges experienced are not uncommon in mining operations,” she said.

She added that safety guidelines and training have already been provided to artisanal and small-scale miners across the region during the ongoing rainy season to minimise risks.

Acting Regional Fire and Rescue Commander for Geita, Keneth Mwakasitu said the search and assessment operations were conducted professionally to determine the extent of the incident.

Mr Mwakasitu confirmed that as of 8:00 pm, no casualties had been recorded following the completion of search and rescue efforts.

“The operation was carried out effectively and the information circulating online is false. There were no casualties,” he said.
