MEN above the age of 40 years have been advised to go for regular checkup for prostate cancer so that those found with the problem can start treatment earlier.
The call was made on Saturday by KAM Musika Hospital Director Dr Kandore Musika, when speaking to journalists during the free prostate cancer screening camp organized by the health facility at Kimara Korogwe in Dar es Salaam.
He said if someone is found with symptoms of prostate cancer in early stages it will be easier to get treatment and return to normal life than when the diseases is at advanced stage.
He said KAM Musika Hospital organised the free screening camp to give opportunity to communities surrounding the hospital to get access to free checkup. Those found with symptoms are given an opportunity to start medication earlier.
“Prostate cancer normally affect men who are above 40 years that’s why we have organized this free prostate screening camp as part of corporate social responsibility and we expect to do the same every year, “he said.
Dr Musika said majority of men are not aware of prostate cancer symptoms, stressing for awareness creation in fighting the disease.
“Most men who attended the free screening camp were not aware of prostate cancer symptoms but after being informed they pledged to share information with others,” he said.
He said there is three major ways in which prostate cancer can be diagnosed including finger, blood test and ultra sound but many people prefer blood screening which they have also been using at the camp.
John Rwekaza (80), who was among the people and turned up for screening, commended KAM Musika Hospital for providing free screening camp because majority of senior citizens like him could not afford regular checkups.
