Giants optimistic on CAF duels
DAR ES SALAAM: SIMBA and Young Africans clubs have shared their perspectives after learning their CAF Champions League opponents at the quarterfinals stage.
Both teams will face tough opponents in the fixtures. Simba will vie against Egyptian giants Al Ahly while Yanga will take on South African powerhouse Mamelodi Sundowns.
The draw, which took place yesterday in Cairo, Egypt, also featured other matchups; including TP Mazembe who will meet Petro de Luanda and Esperance facing ASEC Mimosas.
Following the draw, officials from Simba and Yanga expressed their thoughts, acknowledging the tough challenges ahead, while asserting their readiness to compete.
Yanga’s Head Coach Miguel Gamondi and Chief Executive Officer Andre Mtine, along with Simba’s Mussa Mgosi and club board member Issa Masoud, shared their views.
Simba and Yanga have progressed to the quarterfinals of the most prestigious inter-club competition.
Ahead of the matches, representatives from both teams shared their thoughts. Coach Gamondi of Yanga highlighted the significance of facing Mamelodi Sundowns, stating that they play a similar style of football, making it a special moment for his team.
He expressed pride in representing Tanzania on such stage.
Gamondi also expressed happiness in seeing two teams from Tanzania progress to the quarterfinals, stating that the country should be proud of this achievement.
He believes that both Yanga and Simba can improve African football.
“I’m very positive not only for Yanga, even Simba because both represent Tanzania and we see how things are going for both sides. The country’s ambition is to make an impact in African football,” he said.
Representing Simba, Mussa Mgosi emphasised the tactical nature of their match against Al Ahly.
He stressed the importance of strategic planning to secure a positive outcome, stating that the game will be fiercely contested.
Mgosi also explained that each side strategies intensely to achieve the desired outcome. Simba will need to evaluate how they can advance to the next stage and thoroughly analyse their opponent to secure positive results.
“We expect a tough game, as Al Ahly is a good team with a great history with this competition. The game will be more tactical with each side strategising to make a positive outcome,”
Yanga CEO Andre Mtine exuded confidence in facing Mamelodi Sundowns. He expressed readiness for the encounter and emphasised the importance of adequate preparation.
Simba’s board member Issa Masoud expressed satisfaction with the draw, recognising Al Ahly as a familiar opponent.
He expressed readiness for the competitive clash. The quarterfinals draw was conducted by Ivorian legend Siaka Tiéné, Egyptian football icon Ahmed Hassan and former South African referee Daniel Bennett.
The first leg fixtures are scheduled between March 29th and 30th, while the return legs are set for April 5th and 6th.
