Food vendors spice up tourism with traditional dishes

DAR ES SALAAM: THE aroma of sizzling spices and the vibrant colours of traditional dishes filled the air at the recent Coca-Cola Food Fest in Dar es Salaam.

As food vendors from across the city showcased their culinary creations, it became clear that local cuisine is not only a delicious treat but a powerful economic driver for Tanzania.

Tourists are flocking to the country to experience the unique flavours and cultural richness that Tanzania has to offer, contributing to a surge in tourism revenue.

The Coca-Cola Food Fest, held in Dar es Salaam, brought together food vendors from diverse neighbourhoods across the city.

Participants come from Manzese, Mawasiliano Stand, Kimara Mwisho, Malamba Mawili and Kibamba in the Ubungo district. This diverse representation showcased the rich culinary traditions of various Tanzanian communities.

Ms Hajira Mafasi, one of the competition’s top winners, emphasised the importance of promoting traditional culinary practices to attract tourists.

“By showcasing our unique flavours and culinary heritage,” she said, “we can position our communities as desirable destinations for visitors seeking authentic experiences.”

Mafasi believes that this initiative will not only elevate the quality of food offered but also boost the incomes of local food vendors.

Mama Sara, another competition winner, expressed her gratitude for the recognition. “I’ve been cooking for my community for years,” she said. “This platform provides a valuable opportunity to showcase our heritage and skills.”

Coca-Cola Tanzania’s Senior Marketing Manager, Ms Kabula Nshimo, said that showcasing the country’s rich culinary heritage is key to attracting both domestic and international tourists.

“By innovating and creatively adapting traditional dishes,” she says, “we can position Tanzania as a premier culinary destination and contribute to sustainable economic development.”

Nshimo emphasised the importance of highlighting local flavours during events like the Coca-Cola Food Fest to differentiate Tanzania as a unique travel destination.
