Female journalists told to leverage media for societal impact

DAR ES SALAAM: MINISTER for Communications and Information Technology, Angellah Kairuki has stressed the vital role of women journalists in addressing societal challenges, particularly issues affecting women’s welfare.

Speaking over the weekend in Dar es Salaam during the Queen of News Conference, Ms Kairuki urged female journalists to use their platforms as bridges between citizens and the government.

“The contribution of women journalists is immense in solving various societal challenges, including those related to women’s needs,” she said. “Women journalists should use their pens constructively to connect citizens’ concerns with government action.”

The minister also stressed the importance of accountability in leadership, encouraging women in the media to take full responsibility for the groups and associations they establish. “It is important for you to oversee the groups and associations you form and ensure they deliver tangible, positive outcomes,” she said.

Highlighting opportunities within the sector, Ms Kairuki encouraged women to take initiatives and assured them of government support. “There are many opportunities in the media and communications industry and women should seize them. The government is ready to cooperate and support you,” she said.

She further called for unity among accredited women journalists, noting, “It is important for all accredited women journalists to remain united so that the government can recognise and engage with you effectively at the highest levels.”

Conference coordinator Ms Penina Malundo explained the purpose of the gathering: “The aim of this conference is to discuss the challenges facing women journalists, promote collaboration in social initiatives and help amplify women’s voices in the media.”

Political News Editor at Mwananchi Communications Limited, Ms Lilian Timbuka, encouraged women journalists to actively seek knowledge and build their skills.

“Women journalists should step forward to gain knowledge and strengthen their capacity instead of waiting for training opportunities,” she said.

Similarly, Editor-inChief of Clouds Media Group, Ms Joyce Shebe, urged women to take proactive measures against misinformation online. “Women must develop effective strategies to combat negative information circulating on social media,” she said.

Adding to the discussion, News Editor at Tanzania Leo, Ms Marry Geofrey praised the conference for providing a platform to openly discuss challenges. “Through this conference, we have gained many opportunities, including a space to express the difficulties we face,” she said.
