Family hospitalised after eating mushrooms in Rukwa

SUMBAWANGA: SIX people from the same family from Msandamuungano village in Sumbawanga District, Rukwa Region have been hospitalised after experiencing severe physical fatigue, headache and stomachache shortly after consuming ‘ugali’ with wild mushrooms and spinach.

The family members have been admitted to Dr Atman Hospital at Christ the King are in Sumbawanga municipality for treatment.

Medical-in-Charge Officer at Dr Atman Hospital, Dr Magaka Ngalawa confirmed that the health facility received the six patients yesterday and the facility is providing them with the necessary treatment.

“Medical experts have taken the samples of the food eaten by the patients to the laboratory, the results will be revealed this week “ he said.

“Three patients among them a mother and her two young daughters are responding positively with the treatment while the remaining three patients are still in critical condition,” he added.

The six patients are children and grandchildren of elderly Isaya Kazembe who went to farm field to harvest wild mushrooms and spinach which they cooked for evening meals.

“It took only half an hour after they partook the evening meal when my children and grandchildren started severe fatigue, headache and stomachache…. They were rushed to the health facility for treatment… Thanks to God there is no death reported,” said elderly Isaya.
