Envoys back to league chores

TANZANIA : AFTER a stellar performance in the CAF-Interclub competitions, the three country’s envoys; Simba, Young Africans and Singida Big Stars have now switched their focus to the Premier League with tough fixtures on the card.

Tomorrow, holders Yanga welcome Namungo at Azam Complex in Dar es Salaam in a solo league action set to attract the attention of many people with both sides keen to grab maximum points.

Namungo, under the tutelage of the former Yanga Assistant Coach, Cedric Kaze are yet to stamp a league victory this season as they occupy the 15th slot, hence this is an opportunity for them to upset the defending champions.

On Thursday, two games will be staged to wind up the season’s third round with an early match involving Simba against Coastal Union at Uhuru Stadium in the city.

The Tanga-based club, who are trained by Mwinyi Zahera, has had a sour start to the campaign as in their two opening games, they remain win-less to occupy 14th place with one point in the bag.

Later on the same day, Azam will host Singida Big Stars at the Azam Complex venue in one of the tense fixtures of the unfolding season.

Azam eye to maintain their 100-per cent start of the competition while their Singida-based opponents coming from a fresh 1-0 victory in the CAF Confederation Cup over Future FC, want to use the same energy to downsize the hosts.

So far, Singida Big Stars are also in the category of teams that have launched the 2023/24 season on backpedal, based on the fact that they have not won any game in their two engagements.

Meanwhile, in five matches played in this round, 12 goals have been netted with Tabora United leading the score sheet following their impressive 3-1 win over Tanzania Prisons.

They used their home Ali Hassan Mwinyi Stadium to disappoint the Mbeya region envoys; Tanzania Prisons in one of the entertaining third-round fixtures which witnessed a competitive display from both sides.

Mashujaa registered a 2-0 win over Ihefu at Lake Tanganyika Stadium where they have hosted all their three opening matches of the campaign.

KMC also picked their first maximum points after hammering debutants JKT Tanzania 2-1 while Dodoma Jiji was held to a 1-1 draw by Mtibwa Sugar at Jamhuri Stadium in Dodoma.

In another development, Kagera Sugar stunned Geita Gold 1-0 to cherish their first win of the season in a re-play league match at Kaitaba Stadium in Kagera yesterday.

Dissan Galiwango netted the solitary goal to enable his team to come out victorious and put to bed their two-match win-less run record of the season.

The game was initially scheduled on Saturday night but was postponed in the 39th minute after the occurrence of an electrical fault that disrupted lights at the venue hence it was rescheduled on Sunday afternoon and it resumed from the 39th minute.
