EAC outlines key priorities in strengthening bloc’s security, governance.

NAIROBI: THE 13th Joint Meeting of Sectoral Councils of Ministers responsible for Cooperation in Defence, Peace and Security, alongside the Sectoral Council on the Coordination of Foreign Policy of the East African Community (EAC), concluded today, April 3, 2026,  in Nairobi, outlining the bloc’s key priorities in strengthening regional security and governance.

During the meeting, the inclusion of women in peace, defence, and security matters was given significant emphasis, with delegates adopting a strategic plan to enhance their participation. This move aligns with the implementation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR 1325), which underscores the critical role of women in peace and security.

The meeting also deliberated and approved the establishment of a comprehensive early warning system for defence, security, and disaster management (EAC Early Warning System), aimed at improving preparedness in addressing emerging security and humanitarian challenges across the region.

In efforts to strengthen conflict prevention and resolution mechanisms, the meeting further endorsed a strategic framework for engaging non-governmental organizations, intending to enhance citizen participation in regional affairs and improve the effectiveness of EAC systems.

Chairing the session, Uganda’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs, Rebecca Kadaga, emphasized the need to fast-track the implementation of decisions and directives issued by the councils, as well as to better coordinate foreign policy in response to evolving global security and political dynamics.

From Tanzania’s perspective, it was noted that the agendas discussed are aligned with the National Development Vision 2050, with the country already initiating domestic implementation of several priorities, including strengthening women’s leadership in the defence and security sectors.

The Tanzanian delegation was led by the Minister for Home Affairs, Patrobas Katambi, accompanied by other senior government officials from relevant ministries.
