EAC drafts strategic plan to enhance women’s participation in peace, security

NAIROBI: EAST African Community(EAC) member states meet in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi to advance a draft of a strategic plan that enhances women’s participation in peace, defence and security.
Tanania’s Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Defence and National Service, Dr Faraji Mnyepe, leads the Tanzanian delegation to the 13th Joint Sectoral Council meeting on Defence, Peace and Security and Foreign Policy Coordination held in Nairobi, Kenya on April 1, 2026.
The high-level meeting brought together regional officials to review progress on the implementation of previous resolutions, including steps taken towards establishing an integrated early warning system within the East African Community (EAC).
According to information from the ministry for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, key discussions also focused on advancing a draft strategic plan to enhance women’s participation in peace, defence and security, as well as strengthening the role of non-governmental organisations in conflict prevention, management and resolution across the region.

The Permanent Secretaries further reviewed the implementation of community awareness programmes targeting border populations, with emphasis on promoting good neighbourliness and effective border management.
The meeting was also attended by Deputy Permanent Secretaries from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation and the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ambassador Said Shaib Mussa and Dr Maduhu Kazi, who represented their respective institutions.
The session endorsed a report on the deliberations, which will be submitted to the ministerial-level meeting, where Tanzania’s delegation will be led by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, in collaboration with the Minister for Home Affairs.
