Dr Mwinyi commands ZEC’s professionalism in conducting the Zanzibar’s Elections

ZANZIBAR: PRESIDENT of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has commended the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) for successfully conducting the 2025 Zanzibar General Elections in a peaceful and stable environment.

President Dr Mwinyi made the remarks today, September 8, 2026, at State House in Zanzibar, while receiving the report on the 2025 Zanzibar General Elections from the Chairperson of ZEC, Justice George Joseph Kazi.

He said the Government and ZEC should continue working together to address challenges that emerged during the election so that they are not repeated in future elections.

He also commended ZEC for the increase in the number of registered voters, from 566,352 in 2020 to 717,557 in 2025, representing a 26.7 percent increase. He further noted that, for the first time, the government fully funded the election at 100 percent.

For his part, ZEC Chairperson, Justice George Joseph Kazi, said other achievements included the continued use of the Tactile Ballot Folder, which enables people with visual impairments to vote independently, as well as the establishment of a modern One Stop Center and six district election offices.

President Dr Mwinyi thanked ZEC for the work carried out and urged its leaders and staff to continue performing their duties with integrity and professionalism, while the Government continues to work with the Commission to strengthen the environment for future elections.
