Debate star sets sights on diplomacy

DAR ES SALAAM: THE University of Dar es Salaam’s (UDSM) debating hall crackled with energy.

Two teams, representing universities across Tanzania, clashed in the European Union Debate Contest, a resounding success that showcased the talent and passion of young Tanzanian debaters.

It was Careen Ndika, a 21-year-old actuarial science student, who silenced the room. Her arguments, delivered with a passion that belied her scientific background, resonated with the judges and the audience alike.

When the final gavel fell, and the chants of “team red” echoed through the hall, Ndika emerged victorious, earning the coveted title of top speaker.

“I never expected to see a science student like me debating,” Ndika admitted after her win, a wide smile lighting up her face. “But this platform has shown that scientists are just as concerned with socio-economic issues as anyone else.”

For Ndika, the debate was more than just an intellectual exercise; it was a stepping stone towards her dream of a career in diplomacy.

She believes her analytical skills, honed through her actuarial studies, are a valuable asset in understanding and addressing complex global challenges.

Ndika’s interest in international affairs extends beyond the debate stage. “I aspire to proudly represent my country’s principles, beliefs, and culture internationally,” she said.

“I would like to learn from other nations as well and bring that knowledge back to Tanzania. Most importantly, I believe the strongest bonds between countries are made by people, and I would be honoured to be one of those bridge-builders,” She is particularly interested in diplomacy related to international relations, with a focus on embassies or multilateral organizations.

Ndika envisions herself working to foster understanding and cooperation between nations, addressing issues like sustainable development, conflict resolution, and cultural exchange. Her winning performance was no accident, Ndika’s preparation involved rigorous research and practice.

“I initially extensively researched through the internet and by asking experts in the field questions on what they think is the better option,” she said.

“My second method was practicing debates with my fellow teammates before the event. It was a really strict preparation period that we had as a team.”

This dedication clearly paid off, as her arguments demonstrated a deep understanding of the complexities of the debate topic.

She also revealed that she interviewed approximately 20 employed individuals to gather firsthand insights into the advantages of regular employment, giving her arguments a strong grounding in real-world experiences. This research, combined with her natural talent for public speaking, proved to be a winning combination.

The European Union Debate Contest, organized by the European Union Embassy in Tanzania in collaboration with the Polish Embassy in Tanzania, proved to be a powerful platform for young voices.

Its success paves the way for future debates, promising to become a key event in the Tanzanian academic calendar.

The debate aimed to strengthen youth’s communication skills, critical thinking, collaboration, and problemsolving skills by highlighting relevant solutions to socio-economic challenges.

This initiative, with its focus on empowering young Tanzanians, has the potential to become an annual event, fostering a new generation of leaders and thinkers.

This year’s contest focused on the timely and relevant question of whether entrepreneurship offers more sustainable income than traditional employment.

Ndika, arguing for the stability of regular jobs, presented a compelling case, emphasizing the social security and professional development opportunities they provide.

She believes that while entrepreneurship has its merits, regular employment offers a crucial foundation for many, contributing to economic stability and individual growth.

Ndika’s victory earned her more than just accolades. Along with two other top speakers, Kijafaraja Maduhu of UDSM and Diana Shabani of the Tumaini University Dar es Salaam College (TUDARCo), she will travel to Poland this summer on a fully funded trip.

The trip, sponsored by the European Union, is a testament to the strong relationship between Tanzania, Poland, and the EU.

“This trip is a representation of the good relationship Tanzania has built with Poland and the EU in general over the years, and I’m so excited to learn more about this partnership,” Ndika said.

“It will also help me explore opportunities, establish meaningful connections, and deepen my understanding of issues of diplomacy.”

The Poland trip, which includes visits to Warsaw and opportunities to connect with Polish students, is designed to enhance communication skills and foster intercultural understanding.

For Ndika, it’s a chance to gain valuable experience and build connections that could be crucial to her future diplomatic career.

She sees this trip as an opportunity to learn from Poland’s experience in international relations and to explore potential collaborations between Tanzania and Poland.

Ndika’s journey from science student to aspiring diplomat is an inspiring one. She credits her success not only to hard work but also to the support of her friends, family, and mentors.

She also stays informed on current events through various channels, including social media platforms like LinkedIn and Instagram.

She is also the chairperson of the UDSM Debate Society, General Secretary of the Actuarial Science Students Association of the UDSM, and President of the Tanzania Actuarial Students Society (TASS), demonstrating her leadership qualities and commitment to extracurricular involvement.

As she prepares for her trip to Poland, Ndika’s dream of representing Tanzania on the world stage is becoming increasingly within reach.

Her story is a powerful reminder that with dedication, passion, and a willingness to learn, even the most ambitious goals can be achieved.

She hopes her journey will inspire other young Tanzanians to pursue their dreams, regardless of their academic background, and to become active and engaged citizens of the world.
