DC orders Majengo Market contractor to work 24/7

DODOMA: DODOMA District Commissioner (DC) Jabir Shekimweri has directed the contractor of the Majengo Market upgrading project to work day and night to ensure timely completion of the task.

The directive was issued recently during his inspection of the site, where the state-of-the-art market is set to be constructed in the capital city.

Shekimweri, who also serves as the Chairperson of the Dodoma District Security Committee, urged the contractor to secure all construction materials and prevent any cases of theft.

“There were some challenges traders faced during their relocation to allow for site clearance. The same happens even in our own homes. But this is a matter of development,” the District Commissioner said.

He commended the local authorities for handling the relocation process smoothly, adding that he had not received any complaints related to the exercise.

However, DC Shekimweri advised traders who had been temporarily relocated not to construct permanent structures, as they are expected to return once the project is completed.

“I will be visiting this site regularly, but the key issue is to adhere to the project timeline in order to avoid inconveniences for traders and other stakeholders,” he emphasised.

On his part, the Chairperson of the Association of Traders at Majengo Market, Mr Godson Lugazama, said members understood the importance of the project, noting that the market’s infrastructure had deteriorated significantly.

He urged the authorities to prioritise original traders when allocating spaces once the new market is completed.

The project, which falls under the Tanzania Cities Transforming Infrastructure and Competitiveness (TACTIC) Tier One initiative, is scheduled to run for twelve consecutive months. It aims to modernise infrastructure at the renowned Majengo Market in Dodoma.

The initiative also includes the construction of minibus stands, footbridges and gender-sensitive bridges across various parts of the rapidly growing city.

Funded by the World Bank, the project is part of efforts to improve urban infrastructure across 45 Local Government Authorities (LGAs) in Dodoma.

It focuses on upgrading market facilities and constructing footbridges to enhance accessibility and safety.

The official project title is: Upgrading of Existing Majengo Market, Kizota Minibus Stand and Construction of Nzuguni Minibus Stand and Chaduru, Mailimbili and Ntyuka Footbridges in Dodoma City.
