Dar embarks on major operation to ease traffic congestion along cargo routes

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Dar es Salaam regional authorities are set to launch a special operation to eliminate traffic congestion along key cargo routes serving the Dar es Salaam Port with the aim of speeding up freight movement and improving port efficiency.

Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila announced the initiative during an inspection visit to the weighbridge used by trucks transporting cargo from the port to inland container depots and other destinations across the country.

The weighbridge, managed by the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS), is among areas identified as contributing to delays caused by long queues of trucks waiting for cargo clearance.

Speaking during the inspection, Mr Chalamila said the regional government would take swift measures to address challenges affecting the smooth flow of freight, including congestion around weighbridges and roadside truck parking areas.

“The intervention would help reduce cargo transport delays, improve road safety and enhance the efficiency of the logistics chain linked to the country’s main gateway port,” he said.

Dar es Salaam Port Director Abed G. Abed proposed the introduction of an Integrated Weighbridge system that would connect the TANROADS weighbridge with the port’s systems, allowing trucks to be weighed once instead of undergoing multiple procedures.

He said the system would reduce congestion, improve service delivery and ensure cargo reaches customers on time.

The measures are expected to strengthen the competitiveness of Dar es Salaam Port as a key trade and transport hub serving Tanzania and neighbouring countries in the East and Central African region.
