‘DAR city needs your support tomorrow’

DAR ES SALAAM: DEPUTY Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Hamis Mwinjuma (Mwana FA), has urged sports fans across the country to turn up in large numbers tomorrow (Friday) to witness the Road to BAL international basketball tournament to be held at the International School of Tanganyika (IST) court in Dar es Salaam.

The preliminary round of the tournament will feature Dar City from Tanzania, alongside teams from Uganda and Comoros. Two top teams will advance to the round of 16, scheduled to take place either in Kenya or South Africa, where the best four will qualify for the quarterfinals.

“These games are a big deal for basketball in our country. It’s another great opportunity for Tanzanians to experience international-level competition right here at home,” said Mwinjuma.

He expressed the government’s satisfaction with the progress of basketball in Tanzania, commending Dar City for its strong preparation and participation on the international stage.

Mwinjuma further noted that having a Tanzanian player captaining the team is a source of pride and patriotism, calling on local fans to rally behind the team.

“You’ve ensured a Tanzanian is leading the team as captain. I urge sports fans to come out and support the team — let’s make it a national moment,” he emphasized.

On his part, Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Albert Chalamila, hailed Dar City’s growth, saying the club is becoming more international thanks to the appointment of Senegalese coach Pabi Gueye.

“We’re used to seeing local coaches leading our teams, but this time we’re witnessing a club with a global image. It’s a positive sign for the growth of basketball in Tanzania,” said Chalamila.

He added that the tournament provides a unique opportunity for fans to enjoy high-quality basketball while promoting national unity through sports.

Dar City captain Hasheem Thabit said his team is well-prepared and ready to deliver a strong performance.

“We’re in our final training sessions and calling on Tanzanians to come and support us. Basketball still faces sponsorship challenges, but we’re determined to keep going,” said Thabit.

He added that he and Musa Mzenji have been investing in the team’s development while urging parents to encourage their children to take up sports as a career path and a way of life.

Coach Pabi Gueye expressed his delight to be part of the team, praising Tanzania for its conducive environment and warm hospitality.

“I’m happy to be here in Tanzania. The environment is great, and the team is ready. I’m sure fans will enjoy the show we’ll put on tomorrow,” said Gueye.

Several basketball stars from the United States and other regions are expected to attend the event, led by Tanzania’s own international player Hasheem Thabit.
