Tanzania orders its institutions to allocate budgets for May Day sports

NJOMBE: THE Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations), Deus Sangu, has directed all public and private institutions to allocate budgets and allow employees to actively participate in May Day sports, saying workplace games are essential for improving health and productivity.
The minister made the statement at the Sabasaba Grounds in Njombe Region while officiating the closing of the national May Day sports stressing that such activities are not optional but a policy requirement aligned with the country’s short- and long-term development goals.
Additionally, he commended participants for their commitment and underscored the role of sports in enhancing workers’ wellbeing and efficiency at the workplace.

The minister also thanked President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan for accepting to be the Guest of Honour at the upcoming International Workers’ Day (May Day) celebrations scheduled to be held nationally in Njombe, and praised the regional authorities for well-organised games.
Njombe Regional Commissioner Antony Mtaka said hosting the event had been a blessing for the region, boosting its visibility and stimulating local economic activity.
Earlier, the Chairperson of the National May Day Sports Committee, Rose Masamu, said apart from health benefits to workers, the games had left a positive mark on the region, with participants raising 17.8m/- to support vulnerable groups as part of giving back to the community.
