Dar artist in bid to give khanga global appeal

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIAN model Augusta Masaki has announced her endeavour to make Tanzania’s traditional khanga dress gains a global appeal.

The khanga, a colourful fabric similar to kitenge, but lighter, is worn by women throughout Tanzania and the African Great Lakes region.

Ms Masaki who parades her innovation under the Queens Night banner has been promoting the Tanzanian famous attire for many years now.

Today,Ms Masaki enjoys a huge appeal globally and her international success has helped to inspire many young designers and artists engaged in fabric materials.

Ms Masaki named her recent exhibition in France as among the events that heightened her status and the Tanzanian traditional khanga fashion as well.

“It was a good exhibition and many people liked the Khanga designing system and is messages,” she said.

Currently, she has opened a special platform called Start Tailoring Business with Augusta Masaki” (STB), whose aim is to help young Tanzanians in modeling business.

“ We offer them a 3-month training which helps them to become creative,” she said.

Her remarkable debut in the modeling business was in 2022 when she participated in an exhibition organized by French International School. The event was aimed at helping vulnerable children acquire scholarships.

Augusta Masaka said prominent people in politics, movies, and music are her regular customers.
